Division

The majority voted against an amendment to the usual [second reading motion](https://www.peo.gov.au/learning/fact-sheets/making-a-law.html), which is "*that the bill be read a second time*" - which is parliamentary jargon for agreeing with the main idea of the bill. This means the amendment failed. It was introduced by Lalor MP [Joanne Ryan](https://theyvoteforyou.org.au/people/representatives/lalor/joanne_ryan) (Labor). ### Amendment text > *That all words after "That" be omitted with a view to substituting the following words:* > > *"the House:* > > *(1) notes that, while the National Worker Screening Database will be an important tool to prevent some abuse occurring in the future, it can never investigate the crimes of the past; and* > > *(2) welcomes the fact that there will finally be a Royal Commission into Violence and Abuse of People with Disability".*
