Parliamentary Remuneration Amendment (Basic Salary and Additional Entitlements) Bill 2026

Legislative Assembly (New South Wales), 2026-09-15. negative: ayes 36, noes 44.

Question

That staffing allocation is based on need. It is based on the fact that when we do mobile offices, we often go to communities where people are not literate. They cannot read and write. They do not have technology literacy. Rather than them sending us an email for me to put my letterhead on and send it off, we have to go and sit with them to write the letter with them. When we get the response some two or three months later, we then have to go and sit with them, read it to them and explain it to them. I think there is a lack of understanding about this. I understand the Parliamentary Remuneration Tribunal did some consultation on this, but it did not actually talk to us. It did not talk to members representing the electorates that it was modifying the staffing on. That is a real problem.
